Was Eltern & Kinder gegen Mobbing tun können

Exclusion and teasing are not acceptable, yet they are common in schools. Parents often feel helpless and unsure of what to do when their child is affected by bullying or is even the perpetrator. Here you will learn how bullying starts and how you can support your child in crisis situations and when overcoming conflicts!

How does bullying start?

The cause of bullying among children is often the affected child's differences, whether physical or psychological. Those who do not fit in with the group often become its victims. Envy, for example, over academic performance or clothes can also trigger bullying. It is important to know that not every child who bullies is a bad person. Often, their own problems or a lack of awareness about the issue lead children to bully.

Tips if your child is a victim of bullying

  • Show your child that they can tell you everything
Many children are intimidated by their bullies and avoid answering their parents' questions. It is important that you encourage your child and make it clear that they can escape the situation if they are open and honest.
  • Do not expect things that your child cannot or will not fulfill
Statements such as "Just defend yourself!" or "Talk to the school counselor" can put your child under a lot of pressure and may be counterproductive. Especially with younger children, it is important that you take on tasks such as talking to the school yourself.
  • Get a good idea of the severity of the situation
As an adult, you can assess the circumstances your child is in more rationally. A neutral perspective and empathy are important. Your child is hurt by certain things that you might be able to brush off. Don't forget that.
  • Consider whether there are ways to support your child's integration
Children's parties under your supervision can be a good way to make out-of-school contacts. At the same time, you can observe the group dynamics and your child's behavior.
  • Involve teachers if you are not able to end the bullying on your own
It is important that you know beforehand what you expect from the conversation with the school. Should the situation only be observed, or should the teacher intervene actively? Also, be aware that a conversation alone will not be enough and that you must repeatedly check the success of your measures.
  • Strengthen your child's self-confidence
Make sure you speak well of your child and show them that they are loved and valued. It is easier for your child to get through such a situation if they realize that they are not alone with their worries and feelings.

Tips if your child is a bully

  • Address the situation directly with your child
Provide evidence if necessary. However, do not scold your child, as this often makes it harder to work on the problem together.
  • Make your child aware of what they are doing
Try to make your child aware of the consequences of their actions and to put themselves in the victim's shoes. This way, your child can recognize that their actions were wrong and empathy can often lead to conflict resolution.

  • Ask your child to make amends
Your child will probably even realize themselves that an apology is appropriate. If not, it is your responsibility as a parent to make them aware of this.
  • Enforce consequences if it happens again
Make it clear in the conversation that a repeat offense will not go without consequences.
  • Praise your child when they change their behavior for the better.
It is important for your child that good behavior is seen and praised and that you show them that you are proud of it.

Bullying should never be taken lightly. Teasing can also have serious consequences, especially for children. Teach your child the correct way to treat others and seek help if necessary.
