Where does the tradition come from & what does Carnival mean?
The origins of Carnival go back to antiquity. With lively dances, crazy costumes, and generous servings of food, people were able to follow their desires before Lent began. The celebrations were also intended to use up any perishable foods that were forbidden during Lent. This is also where the term "Carnival" comes from, derived from the Latin "carne vale", meaning "farewell to meat".
