When Kids Play Video Games – How Video Games Shape Our Family Life
Sometimes I wonder if I was as fascinated by digital worlds as a child as my children are today. The answer is: Yes, absolutely! Back then, I would sit at the PC for hours on end, mastering level after level, and today I watch my eldest create the craziest structures in Minecraft. At the same time, however, I also feel the uncertainty that many parents know: How much gaming is okay? Which games are suitable? And how do we as a family deal with the challenges that come with digital games?
An Expert Who Knows What He Is Talking About
These exact questions were at the heart of the latest episode of Kinder digital begleiten. Host Leonie Lutz spoke with Fabian Karg, the deputy director of the State Media Center of Baden-Württemberg. Fabian is not only an expert in digital education, but also a father himself – and therefore knows how difficult it can sometimes be to strike a balance between digital literacy and family peace.
Podcast Content: Between Curiosity, Rules, and Genuine Concerns
- Openness and Curiosity: Fabian Karg emphasizes how important it is to genuinely take an interest in the games and digital worlds of children. Only then can an honest exchange be established based on trust.
- Individual Solutions Instead of Blanket Rules: Every child is different – and so is their relationship with video games. While some children get really worked up after a round of FIFA, others are not interested in even first-person shooters. Blanket bans don't help much in these cases.
- Dealing with Frustration and the Risk of Addiction: There are games that specifically focus on quick rewards and moments of frustration – and that is exactly what can lead to a risk of addiction. On the other hand, many games also promote problem-solving skills and frustration tolerance.
- Helpful Resources: I found the tip about spieleratgeber-nrw.de particularly interesting – a website that helps parents and children better understand games and agree on rules together.
My Thoughts: Between Enthusiasm and a Gut Feeling
I have to be honest: The episode gave me courage, but also showed me how much uncertainty is involved. Especially when the Brawl Stars fever breaks out in my daughter's class, I ask myself: Do I need to be stricter now? Or should I rather play along to understand what fascinates her so much about it? Fabian Karg's approach of repeatedly talking about it and developing rules together really appeals to me. It's not about control, but about guidance – and about not seeing the digital world as an enemy.
My Most Important Learnings for Everyday Family Life
- Show interest and play along – this is how genuine conversations arise.
- Agree on rules together and adjust them again and again.
- Take frustration and anger during gaming seriously and look for solutions together.
- Use good information sources like spieleratgeber-nrw.de.
- Recognize digital media as part of their world – not as a threat.
Conclusion: Growing Together – Also in Digital Worlds
After this episode, one thing above all remains with me: There is no one-size-fits-all solution, but plenty of opportunities to learn and grow together with our children. Openness, curiosity, and honest exchange are the best companions on this journey. I plan to ask more often with genuine interest, play along – and repeatedly look for the right balance between "letting them be" and "intervening".
