One of the hardest transitions for parents is when their child starts school: letting them walk to school alone.
Concerns about their safety naturally arise. What if cars reverse out of driveways? What if drivers don’t obey speed limits in school zones? These and other fears trouble concerned parents every day.
Younger children should only walk to school accompanied by adults. Once your child feels ready to walk to school alone, knows all the important road safety rules for children, and can identify dangers, they will be ready to take this step toward independence. It can also give them a huge boost in confidence.
Make their journey safer
If your child is old enough (and feels safe enough) to walk to school, there are several ways to make their journey safer.
Familiarize your child with the route
Point out safe places to cross the road and potential hazards while walking to school together. This will help your child learn to identify dangers on their own and feel safer and better prepared when the time comes.
Explain road rules
Make sure your child knows the basic road safety rules for children. Where should they stop? How should they look out for cars? What should they do before crossing the road? And much more.
Walking Buddies
Other children may walk the same route to school. Find a walking buddy for your child to walk to school with. Alternatively, you could take turns with other parents accompanying the children to school.
Knowing how to act in emergencies
Explain to your child what to do in dangerous situations, for example if a stranger approaches them. (With the Anio 5 children’s smartwatch, they can send you an emergency call directly by pressing the SOS button)
Children under 10
Children under 10 should hold your hand when crossing roads, pedestrian crossings, and parking lots—we all know that children can suddenly run off!
How Anio helps your child stay safer on their way to school!
GPS tracking: With the Anio app, you can reliably track your child’s location and view it on a map. You can also track their journey to school or to after-school activities using a set route.
Safe zones: You can set up safe zones in the Anio app and will be notified whenever your child enters or leaves one and the watch’s location is updated.
SOS calls: In both major and minor emergencies, your child can make an SOS call by pressing the SOS button on the watch. The watch will call the three SOS contacts one by one until someone answers and send their last GPS location via SMS.
Phone & chat: Up to 10 numbers can be saved on the watch via the Anio app, and your child can call them from the watch. Only these numbers can contact the watch, and calls from strangers are blocked. The chat function lets you stay in touch at all times.
Watch their confidence grow
If you take the right precautions, letting your child walk to school alone can be a rewarding experience. You will give your child a sense of independence and make sure they feel safe and comfortable on their way to school.
