Need some ideas for things to do with your kids this autumn? We've put together 10 (almost) free autumn activities for children!
10 (almost) free autumn activities
1. Collect chestnuts & make crafts with them 🌰
You can collect chestnuts with your kids until mid-October. You can find cute craft ideas on sites like Pinterest. But chestnuts aren't the only things you can collect in autumn. How about acorns, walnuts, or hazelnuts?
2. Collect & dry colorful leaves 🍁
Colorful autumn leaves are perfect for spending a creative afternoon with your kids. The dried leaves can then be reused for crafts. To dry the leaves, simply place them between 2 layers of kitchen roll in a heavy book (it's best to use an older book, as the leaves can stain the pages a little). After a few days, the leaves will be dry and can be used for decorating. Alternatively, your kids can also make their own "leaf identification poster" by gluing different leaves onto a piece of cardboard and then labeling them accordingly. Or they can use the leaves in combination with watercolors and create creative works of art!
3. Fly kites 🪁
A classic autumn activity. Of course, the weather has to cooperate – so it should be at least a little windy. For small children from around 3 years old, a simple children's kite with just one string is perfectly sufficient. Otherwise, the "kite-flying event" can quickly turn into an "untying-the-string afternoon" – frustration for children and parents alike! For children from around 8 years old, a power kite is the more exciting alternative.
4. Family movie night 🍿
For a cozy movie night at home, simply choose a movie, prepare popcorn and snacks, get out some cozy blankets and enjoy the movie night with the whole family!
5. Carve a pumpkin 🎃
Halloween is coming soon and the matching decorations can easily be made at home.
The following items are needed to carve a Halloween pumpkin:
- 1 pumpkin
- a pointed, sharp knife (it's best to help your child with this step)
- 1 spoon
- 1 pen for sketching
6. Make a campfire 🏕
You need wood, fire starters and a fire pit for your campfire. Optionally, you can buy small sausages or marshmallows to enhance the campfire experience!
7. Paint stones with autumn motifs 🎨
Go on a family walk and collect stones with large surfaces. At home, you can then clean and paint them. Depending on the motif, they can be used as decoration in your home.
8. Carve potato stamps & design pictures or greeting cards 🥔
A simple, inexpensive and above all creative way to spend a rainy autumn afternoon with children. Potatoes are usually always in stock. So no planning is necessary in advance and you can start right away. Simply cut the potatoes in half, draw the motif and "carve it out". Then dip the potato stamps in, e.g., acrylic paint & start stamping. Great works of art or greeting cards could be created this way.
9. Complete a forest obstacle course and finish all the stations 🌲
Want to burn off some energy? Then find an (forest) obstacle course near you and complete all the stations. The step counter of the Anio 5 adds an extra challenge to see who can manage the most steps!
Fresh air, satisfaction and tiredness at the end included.
10. Make a lantern for the St. Martin's procession 🏮
If your children haven't already made a lantern at daycare, kindergarten or school, then you know what to do. Find a simple tutorial and you can get started!
