My child is bored, what can I do?

"Mom, Dad, I'm bored!" You've probably heard this sentence from your child before. Maybe you've tried to suggest lots of ideas and none of them were really accepted? Find out here why our little ones are bored and whether this is actually a bad thing! We'll explain and give you tips!

How does boredom arise?

Boredom can have many different causes, including

Children are exposed to too many stimuli over a long period of time
If your child is constantly occupied with television or cell phone games and these stimuli are removed, your child will become bored. This is because your child is not stimulated to come up with their own ideas. It becomes increasingly difficult to keep themselves occupied.

Your child is used to being kept busy all the time
Whether you try to "entertain" your child at the first feeling of boredom or they have a strict schedule of school, sports and evening activities every day, your child will get bored on less busy days. They have never learned to occupy themselves and use their creativity to beat boredom.

Your child is bored after working intensively on one thing
This boredom is part of the game. It arises because no new idea has yet been formed and is completely normal.

Is boredom a bad thing?

Boredom is by no means a bad thing. Quite the opposite. It promotes your child's healthy development, builds self-confidence and encourages creativity. Boredom can usually be seen as a good thing, as it is often a sign that stress has been eliminated and your child has the opportunity to calm down. If your child is independent at a young age, this has great advantages for their future. This is because they are able to develop further and find ideas without outside influences.

How can I support my child?

Of course, none of this means that you have to watch your child get bored. Here are some tips to help you give them the right amount of encouragement:

Allow boredom but don't leave your child alone with it
Let your child get a little bored. However, give small suggestions for analog activities from time to time.

Less is more
Don't overwhelm your child with cheap, short-lived toys.toys that last longer and are versatile. Your child should use their creativity and this works best when their environment is not prefabricated. A stimulating environment with toys that offer many different ways to play (e.g. building blocks) is important as this encourages curiosity and an understanding of relationships.

Take free time literally
Make sure that your child doesn't have a day that is too packed and consciously plan time when there is nothing to do. This encourages your child's creativity and allows them to relax.
